How do I message someone? Who can message me?
You can write to a member from their profile or from Messages, and you choose who can write to you.
This needs an account. Sign in to the app first.
Steps
- Open the Commons tab and tap the speech bubble button at the top right. This opens Messages.
- To write to someone, tap the pencil button (Write a new message). Type a member's name and tap it in the list.
- If a member does not show up in the search, open their profile and tap the message button there. A member who is Not listed does not show up, and their profile says This profile isn't available.
- Type your message and tap the send button.
- To choose who can message you, tap the sliders button (Message settings) at the top of Messages. Pick Everyone, Only my connections or No one.
Who can message you
Everyone means any member can message you. Only my connections means only members you are connected with can start a conversation with you.
Connections are members whose connection request you accepted, or who accepted yours.
No one means no one can start a conversation with you. Anyone you have already written to can still reply.
Blocking a member always stops their messages, whatever you choose.
When a message is not sent
If you see "This member isn't accepting messages from you right now", that member has limited who can message them, or has blocked you. SOS does not say which, and sending again will not help.
A new account also waits about 10 minutes before it can send a message. That message tells you how long is left.
Looking after a conversation
Open a conversation and tap Conversation options to mute it, hide it, delete it for you, report it or block the member.
In the Messages list, each row has its own menu with mute, hide and delete for me.
If a member is Not listed
A conversation you already have stays in your Messages list, and you can keep writing in it.
Their name may show as Member in your list.
People who already message, follow or are connected with a Not listed member may still see their name. The note under Not listed on Edit Profile says which applies right now.
