Is it safe to meet people I find on SOS?

Safety and crisis help

SOS cannot check who a person really is, so be careful before you meet.

What SOS can and cannot check

People join SOS with an email address and a username they choose. SOS does not check IDs or run background checks, and it cannot confirm that a profile is true.

Any signed-in member can host a gathering. For an in-person gathering, the host types in the place. SOS does not check the host or the place.

SOS cannot watch what happens at a meetup or step in if something goes wrong.

Before you share details

Other signed-in members can see your community profile, such as your name and interests, and sometimes your bio and location (Edit Profile says which). Share only what you are comfortable with strangers seeing.

Direct messages are stored on SOS's server and are not end-to-end encrypted. Do not share your password with anyone.

If you decide to meet

Meet in a public place. Tell someone you trust where you are going and when you plan to be back.

If you feel unsafe at any point, leave. If you are in danger, call 911 or your local emergency number.

If someone makes you uncomfortable

You can block or mute a member. They are not told.

You can also report a post, message, conversation or member. Reports are reviewed by people, not in real time.

Mutual Aid in SOS

The Mutual Aid screen is a private list on your own device. It does not post, share or match your offers and needs with anyone.
