What is the Human Accord?

About SOS

The Human Accord is a set of eleven shared commitments, called tenets, that people of any background, faith or politics can hold.

What it is

The Human Accord is a short list of commitments about how to treat yourself, other people and the world around you. Each commitment is called a tenet.

SOS draws on the tenets in many of its tools. Many tools show a short Human Accord note that lists the tenets they relate to. Tap a tenet there to read it.

The Accord calls itself a best current attempt that is open to being tested and improved. It is not a finished system.

The tenets

Here are the tenets, grouped by family, in the order the Human Accord screen shows them.

Tend Yourself: Cultivate Flourishing; Pursue Truth, Knowledge, and Growth; and Master and Create.

Care for Others: Minimize Unnecessary Suffering; Love Widely; Practice Active Care; and Uphold Fair Justice.

Honor the Web: Honor the Interconnected Web; Champion Sovereign Freedom; and Be a Good Ancestor.

Hold Loosely: one tenet, with the same name.

What it is not

It is not a religion. It does not ask you to believe anything about the universe, and people of any faith or none can hold it.

It is not a membership test. Almost no one lives every tenet well, and you do not have to. Start where you can.

It is an invitation, not a law. The rules for taking part in the community are called the SOS Community Standards. They draw on the Accord, and they are a separate set of rules.

Where to find it

On Home, the Tenet of the Day card has an All tenets button. It opens the Human Accord screen.

On the Human Accord screen, tap any tenet to read it in full.

When you are signed out, the first page you see has a Human Accord section too. Tap a tenet there to read it. There is more to read after you sign up.
