Can I use SOS with only a keyboard?
Many screens work with Tab and Enter, but some controls may need a mouse or touch.
Moving around
- Press Tab to move forward and Shift and Tab to move back.
- A white line with a blue edge shows which control has focus.
- Press Enter to use the control that has focus. On a checkbox, a switch, a radio button or a tab, press Space.
- On a signed-in page on the web, the first Tab stop is usually Skip to main content. Press Enter on it to jump to the main part of the page. On a wide window this skips the side menu.
- Press Escape to close a popup. If it does not close, Tab to a Close or Cancel button if the popup has one.
Popups and the floating buttons
While a popup is open, Tab stays inside it. This is on purpose, so focus does not slip behind the popup.
Because of that, floating buttons such as Help and Get help now cannot be reached with Tab while a popup is open. Close the popup first, then Tab to the button.
The question mark key (?) opens Help from any screen, even when a popup is open. It does not work while you are typing in a text box.
What does not work yet
SOS was built for touch and mouse first. A few popups and panels cannot be closed with Escape, such as the safety message in the mental health check-in. Some controls may not take keyboard focus in a useful order. For example, the floating Help and Get help now buttons come last.
If you get stuck, tell us which screen. See I found something I can't use. How do I tell you?
